The History And Purpose Of Ceiling Fans

In warmer climates, heat and humidity can become unbearable, especially in the summer time. A variety of devices have been created and developed in order to combat this. One of the most effective and popular methods of cooling a room involves ceiling fans.

The first ceiling fans models were invented more than a hundred years ago, in the late nineteenth century. Out of necessity, they originated in the American South, where the oppressive heat and humid climate were a hindrance to everyday life. Originally, these devices were powered by running water, which turned a series of belts that in turn rotated the blades. With such a system, multiple units could be powered at once, which was convenient for restaurants, households, and businesses.

It wasn't long before the electric motor, which was first developed for use in sewing machines, was adapted so that it could be used in motorized cooling devices. This meant that fans could be put almost anywhere, including on ceilings, allowing people to cool their homes and rooms more easily than ever. These new units, with self-contained motors, became extremely popular, and the inventor of the first motorized fan was met with intense competition.

By the beginning of World War II, it had become standard to create these devices with four blades, rather than the original two. In addition, they had also become so prominent by this time that they were fairly common in American homes and households. They had also gained popularity internationally. However, the advent of the Great Depression made such items a luxury, and they fell out of favor until around 30 years later, when Asian manufacturers made them easy to afford and more accessible than ever. They also became popular with people concerned about their personal energy output, because they used less electricity than air conditioning units.

Ceiling fans have enjoyed a long and successful history in the United States. They're convenient, useful, and use less energy than other forms of air cooling. With all of these advantages, it's no wonder they have become so popular.
