Lighting For Different Rooms In A Home

Simply filling a room with light is no longer sufficient for today's home decorator. There are many different styles and sizes of fixtures that add to the spaces in a home. Here are a couple suggestions for three different rooms that require good lighting.

One of the most frequented rooms in a house would probably be the kitchen. The kitchen is usually a gathering place for family and friends. Flush mounts are a popular choice in the kitchen, but there is also the option of pendant light or track lighting that can add extra brightness and added style. If there is an island in the kitchen, there is kitchen island fixtures that spans the area of the counter top. One other option would be to add a lighted hanging pot rack above the island for the same added brightness, but with a different style. Any fixtures should be hung at least 30 to 40 inches above the island.

Another important room would be the dining room. This room is usually filled with a table, chairs and china that have been hand selected. The light in this room should match and accent the mood of the current furnishings. Flush mounts can be used above the table as well as pendant lights and chandeliers. There is also the option of putting sconces around the room to add an extra dimension of light to the space. Any fixture that is hung above the table should be at least 30 to 34 inches above the table.

The last room, that is usually seen by all guests, is the bathroom. The typical fixtures used for this room are vanity, bar or track lighting. These fixtures are usually hanging right above the mirror and should offer a good amount of light. There is always the option to hang pendants, sconces or flush mounts, but these will not provide as much light to the room. When figuring out which fixtures to use in the bathroom you should consider lights that are close to the mirror. Bathroom lights should be hung a few inches above your head.

Lighting fixtures have become an accessory to a room, and they can look like they have been custom made to match your space. Shade material can be in clear glass, alabaster glass, frosted glass, fabric, murano glass or be hand blown.

Since there are now so many options for lighting, it is a good idea to research the size and color that will match your existing furnishings. It's easier to change the light fixtures in a room than it is to change all your furniture.
