Tiffany Lighting
The original Tiffany Lighting Design was developed in the late 1800’s by Louis Tiffany. The New York born son of Charles Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co Jewellers, was a highly regarded designer of his time. He was synonymous with works of art including stained glass windows, mosaics, fine jewellery and of course the style of lamps that now bear his name.
Tiffany developed the art form by using discarded pieces of stained glass from his lead window designs and soon realised he had created a highly desirable product in its own right. With the vibrant colours and Japanese influenced designs the art form lent itself perfectly to lighting.
Tiffany’s first lighting designs were commercial projects on the grandest of scales. He worked closely with Thomas Edison to develop both decorative lighting and stage lights at the Lyceum Theatre in New York City, incidentally the first theatre in the world to have electric illumination. By 1899 the design had crossed the Atlantic and was exhibited in the form of vases and pendants in London. A year later the first electric Tiffany Table Lamp was displayed at a Parisian exhibition and featured a Dragonfly motif lamp shade on a Cast Bronze Base.
Over the last century many artists have based their designs on Tiffany’s original format. Leaded Glass Lamps were reborn over many periods including Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. To this day Tiffany style lighting is as desirable as ever before and a wide range of hand made reproduction pieces are available online including pendants, non electric lamp shades, uplighters, wall lights, floor lamps and table lamps.
