The Lightsaver Guide to Choosing the Right Lighting for Your Home

Choosing the right lighting can completely transform a room. The right light can make a space feel larger, warmer and more inviting, while also providing the practical illumination you need for everyday life.

With so many different styles, bulb types, colour temperatures and fittings available, choosing the right lighting isn't always straightforward.

That's why we've put together this simple guide to help you choose the right lighting for every room in your home.

A useful approach is to think about three types of lighting, also known as: Layered Lighting

Layered Lighting: How to Create the Perfect Lighting Scheme

One of the easiest ways to improve the lighting in your home is to stop thinking about lighting as a single fitting in the centre of the ceiling.

Instead, think in layers. Layered lighting combines different types of light within the same room to create a space that is practical, comfortable and visually interesting. Rather than relying on one bright light to do everything, you can use several light sources for different purposes.

A well-designed lighting scheme typically combines ambient, task and accent lighting.

The Three Layers of Lighting

1. Ambient Lighting – Your Main Layer

Ambient lighting provides the overall illumination for a room.

This is usually the first layer you think about and can include:

Ambient lighting should provide enough general light for everyday activities without making the room feel overly bright or harsh.

Think of it as the foundation of your lighting scheme.

2. Task Lighting – Light Where You Need It

Task lighting adds focused illumination to areas where you carry out specific activities.

For example, you might need additional light:

  • Over a kitchen worktop

  • Above a desk

  • Beside a bed

  • Around a bathroom mirror

  • Over a reading chair

  • Above a dining table

Task lighting makes everyday activities easier and can also reduce the need to illuminate the entire room when you only need light in one particular area.

A good example is a kitchen with ceiling lighting combined with under-cabinet lights. The ceiling lights illuminate the room, while the under-cabinet lighting provides focused light directly onto the worktop.

3. Accent Lighting – Add Atmosphere and Interest

Accent lighting is the layer that can really bring a room to life.

It can be used to highlight architectural features, artwork, furniture or decorative objects, while also creating a more relaxed atmosphere.

Examples include:

Accent lighting doesn't necessarily need to be particularly bright. Its purpose is often to add depth, contrast and atmosphere.
